FixedInPost.com - Online VFX Tutorials
Fixed in Post?
As long as I have had an online presence I have had the passion to create a place where other people can learn editing and VFX like I did. As most people my age, I grew up having Video Copilot and that literally changed my life in so many ways. I was able to teach myself very valuable employable skills that set my career off in a trajectory from the beginning of Highschool.
My history with making online tutorials
This was a site I made in 2014 after learning some wordpress, long out of reach of being able to host videos directly on the site, so it was more of a hub for the videos on Youtube.
At some point life events caused me to stop working on it and I leaned back into more freelance video shooting and editing work.
Youtube Tutorials
I can remember the early days of youtube. There was a small group of us that heavily depended on watching tutorials to learn new things and so we would trade making tutorials for each other based on what we knew how to do.
I remember making a tutorial specifically for one guy on how to make 3D glass shards rise in the air using 3DS Max like in the show Heroes, and in return he made me a tutorial on how to make a heat vision effect using Trapcode Particular from Smallville.
I think a large part of that has always been ingrained in me, being able to share and give back knowledge I had access to that changed the course of my life for the better and put me right in the position of my dream job.
I have always tinkered and played around with uploading tutorials on youtube, I’ve attempted to create self hosted videos on my site in the past, but nothing ever stuck. Either it was too demanding in time, money, or my own skillset to make it work the way I wanted it to.
Over time creating something like this has stayed in the back of my mind waiting on the right circumstances to become something. Over the last couple years I have been slowly putting together that very thing.
Learning Davinci Resolve Fusion
A couple years ago I made the decision to move most of my VFX work into Resolve Fusion and take advantage of the Node workflow. I had to tap into that part of my brain I realized I hadn’t used since I first started editing.
It was relearning how to do things in new software and the act of having to hunt down any information I could find online. I noticed there was a quite small pocket of information when it came to Fusion compared to Adobe.
The information was there but it was much harder to get a grasp on how to do things. I resorted to reading the manual a lot more and just playing around until I could get the end result. I even took a few freelance jobs where I forced myself to only use Fusion to get the job done. That would give me a deadline with consequences for motivation.
In the end I took the Blackmagic Certification test for Fusion and passed.
The Catalyst
I believe that was the perfect storm of events that pushed me to find a way to build something that I have had itching in my head for over a decade.
Little by little I researched on building websites and the workflow for self hosting videos, having project files be accessible for download. I worked on some branding and looked at many different options for a name.
I didn't want it to be something tied to my name and face, because I see a future in it that will be beyond just me.
All of this to say, I have built an online VFX Tutorial/Course Website called Fixedinpost.com
I haven’t done a hard launch of it yet, this post will actually be my first public acknowledgement that it exists. This is where I will be producing VFX/Post Production tutorials moving forward.
I’ll still be posting the personal projects I work on here like my Current Production Diary Series for my Animated Film “I Don’t Steal”
I have a couple In-depth paid courses in the works that will be priced very affordably, but all other tutorials will be free to watch and downloadable project files to follow along.
There are also already Free Cloud VFX assets you can download here.
If you happen to find this post before the courses come out, Sign up with your email below and I’ll be sending you a 50% off coupon code for a course when they become available. (Once the courses are up, this section will be removed from this post, so this is kind of like an early bird special!)
Thanks for dropping by, hope to see you over at Fixedinpost.com!
