Social Media Profile Photo

Shooting a photo for my social media page

I recently set up a Facebook page that would connect to my website and I wanted to shoot a new profile picture for it.

Head over to Facebook and like my page!

I knew I wanted something that had high contrast and dark shadows, because I haven't really shot anything like that yet outside of school.

I invited Michael over to take the photo, he was the subject of a previous post here.

Basic Three Point Lighting

I decided I was going to try something that would cause dramatic shadows so I put a cheap home depot Scoop Light directly above my head.

This photo was taken on a Nikon D5100 with a 35mm F/1.8 lens shot at F/2.8 ISO100 and shutter speed of 1/100

Once I found the right spot to stand under I added an edge light to help separate some of me from the background.

Here is the lighting plot that will show the setup below.

It never gets tiring experimenting with different lighting styles. I would encourage anyone interested in filmmaking to worry about learning as many lighting tricks as they can.

That will add more value to your work than a new camera will.
